The course is articulated in three teaching units: the Molecular Oncology unit is focused on the molecular basis of cancer. The pathogenesis of animal and human cancer process will be presented with an emphasis on molecular, genetic, cell biological and pathophysiological aspects of cancer and immunity.
The Pathophysiology coursework provides students with foundation in modern physiopathology, which will be analyzed from a molecular perspective. The major metabolic diseases in animals and humans will be described, the last ones with a specific focus on suitable animal models.
The animal models and parasitic diseases teaching unit will focus on selected parasitic diseases to present the contribution from available animal models to the molecular research and diagnostics, to the evaluation of the epidemiological risk linked to zoonotic infection, and to the development of effective vaccine programs and pharmacological treatments.

Programma / Syllabus Module: Animal models and parasitic diseases:

1. Genomic, immunologic and diagnostic techniques for the study of parasitic diseases as for instance visceral Leishmaniasis and Filarial infections in laboratory rodent species and dogs.
2. Usefulness of animal models for the understanding of the genetic and pathogenetic basis of parasitic diseases.
3. Evaluation of the epidemiological risk linked to parasitic zoonoses: contribution from the canine model
4. Comparative evaluation of vaccine program efficacy and antiparasitic treatments through clinical trials in canine model.
Practices: unconventional animal models for the study of parasitic and vector-borne diseases
