Informazioni generali / general information

Obiettivi: The aim of the course is to give the students an overview of the biotechnological approach to the diagnosis of selected clinically important disorders in small domestic animals. Emphasis will be given to the combined use of clinical, morphological and biomolecular markers for the early detection of diseases. Knowledge bridge between animal and human medicine will be underlined

Lingua dell'insegnamento / Language of instruction: English

Metodi didattici /Activities: Class lectures and practice in computer laboratory

Programma di studio / Syllabus

Short description english flag

The course is organized in three teaching modules.

The module "Diagnostic workup in the clinical practice" consider the clinical features and the diagnostic procedures of some common diseases in dogs and cats. Since small animals are excellent models of spontaneous disease for studying human pathologies, the disorders detected in both species will be considered. The diagnostic work up will be applied on heart disease, acute and chronic kidney failure and endocrin disorders related to heart and kidney disease in dog and cat.

The module "Morphological and molecular markers of disease" gives essential anatomical and embryological knowledge for the identification of morphological and molecular biomarkers of disease in perspective of the application of biotechnologies in veterinary diagnostic.

The module "Biochemical markers in disease diagnosis" provides students core knowledge of analytical techniques, instrumentation and calculation used in clinical biochemistry laboratories. For each method described, examples of body fluids biochemical markers assessed in veterinary practice for diagnosis of selected clinically important disorders are provided.

Programma / Syllabus Module: Biochemical markers in disease diagnosis:

Lectures (6h)
- Methodology and instrumentation required to measure markers of disease in biological samples. Included will be discussions on principles and practice of biochemical monitoring of: myocarditis, chronic heart failure, acute or chronic renal failure, and endocrine disorders. (4h).
- Laboratory mathematics. Ways of expressing the measurement of clinical chemistry analytes, with reference to the International System definition of quantity, concentration, solution and dilution. (2h).

Practice (12h)
Students will develop skills in calculations routinely used in clinical biochemistry laboratories. Examples: computer elaboration of raw data from quantitative assays of biomarkers, conversion of units of measure, graphical representation of results.

Programma / Syllabus Module: Diagnostic workup in the clinical practice:

Lectures (18h)
- Clinical features of heart disease: myocarditis and chronic heart failure in dog, hypertrophic myocardial disease in cat
- Clinical features of acute and chronic renal failure
- Clinical features of thyroid dysfunctions in dog and cat
- Diagnostic and prognostic value of biomarkers in the disease mentioned above

Programma / Syllabus Module: Morphological and molecular markers of disease:

Lectures (12h)
- Normal gross anatomy, microscopic structure, and embryology of organ target of the disease presented in the integrated course (6h).
- Morphological and developmental biomarkers of endocrine, cardiac and renal diseases in dog and cat (2h).
- Novel biotechnological tools in veterinary diagnostic and overview of the application of these approaches to cases presented in the clinical module (4h).

Practice (12h)
Scenario-based classes around digital images of light and electronic microscopy tissue sections to introduce students to the microscopic features of normal tissues and organs, and giving them the bases to compare and contrast the normal with the abnormal in various disease states.
