Informazioni generali / general information

Obiettivi: The aim of the course is to provide students with theoretical and practical information on molecular, biochemical and immunological dynamics established in the host-parasite coevolution process. The students will be introduced to the comprehension of the basic biological mechanisms determining the within-host (immunological) and between-host (epidemiological) relationships with parasites, and the parasite-disease dynamics.

The integrated course will be divided into 3 educational units:
Molecular patterns in host-parasite co-evolution
Immunological interactions and applied immunology in parasitology
Biochemical bases in host-parasite interactions

The course will illustrate: a) the mechanisms underlying genetic and phenotypic variability in hosts and parasites, b) the factors determining parasite infectivity and promoting the immune responses in infected animals, and c) the understanding and critical evaluation of available research materials

Programma / Syllabus Module: Biochemical bases in host-parasite interactions:

1) Methods to detect proteins involved in host-parasite interactions: focus on proteomics and metabolomics
2) Involvement of host-parasite interactions in signalling pathways
3) Parasite secretomes and exosomes
4) Extracellular matrix and related proteolytic acitivties
