Informazioni generali / general information

Obiettivi: Animal research is facing new challenges in relation to: bioethical issues, innovative pharmacological and toxicological research, and on the impact of biotech in designing animal studies. The course will provide a multidisciplinary overview of the latest developments within the themes mentioned with particular reference to the approaches and biotechnological applications.

Programma di studio / Syllabus

The course is divided in three modules and it will provide deep knowledge on the applications of biotechnology in the animal research. In particular, the first module will deal with bioethical reflection and the potential of biotechnological evolution, methods and principles of ethics in science. The second module will provide an up-to-date overview on the application of biotechnology research for innovative drugs: recombinant therapeutic proteins, synthetic oligonucleotides, pharmacogenomics and pharmacogenetics. The third module will also provide outline on the statistical aspects related to the design and power of experimental plans in biotechnology research.

Programma / Syllabus Module: Bioethics and Biotechnology:

the historical and the theoretical origins and milestones of bioethics (4 h);
the main ethical theories: classifications, methods and principles (6 h);
the question of the ethics in science, with regard to methods and validity of scientific knowledge (4 h);
regulation of biotechnology as a new form of agreement between science and society (4 h).

Biotechnological production from eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells: insulin, growth hormone, growth factors (4 h)
Recombinant therapeutic proteins (4 h)
Synthetic oligonucleotides (2 h)
Pharmacogenomics and pharmacogenetics (4 h).
